Frequently Asked Questions

How does the tool find peers?
We look up each ticker's industry classification from Yahoo Finance and return every other US-listed company in the same industry, sorted by market cap. No SIC codes, no guesswork — just modern industry groupings that reflect how businesses actually compete today.
Why are some companies alone in their industry?
Industry classifications are imperfect. Apple, for example, sits alone in "Consumer Electronics" because its real competitors — Google, Microsoft, Samsung — are classified under different industries. When a company has few or no direct peers, we show you the top 20 in its broader sector instead.
Where does the data come from?
The company list comes from SEC's official public company database (~10,000 US-listed companies). Industry classifications and market caps come from Yahoo Finance. The full index is pre-computed and refreshed periodically to keep things fast.
How are peers ranked?
By market capitalization, largest first. When an industry has more than 20 companies, we show the top 20 and display a count of how many total companies exist in that group.
What do I do with the peer list?
Use it as a starting point for research. Once you know who a company competes with, you can look up any of those peers on tikr2xl to compare financials, margins, growth rates, and valuations side by side over 10 years of history.
